The parish church St. Paul is the oldest parish church of Passau.
The first church was built around 1050 to St. Consecrated to Paul. After the destruction of fires in 1512 and 1662, the current building was built in 1678.

At the Paulusbogen, the northern gate to the old town, a flight of steps leads up to the cream-and-pink, single-towered church. The builder is Carlo Antonio Carlone. The original, very flat spire of the 17./18. Century was replaced in the second half of the 19th century by a high pointed helmet. This was demolished in 1950 because of alleged disrepair and rebuilt only about one-third high. Since then, the tower after the cathedral is only the second highest church tower Passau.

In the interior, the black gilded altars and the equally colored pulpit stand out against the bright walls. The large high altar from around 1700 bears a painting by Franz Werner Tamm depicting the beheading of the Apostle Paul. The side altars and the pulpit were made between 1678 and 1689. The painting Beweinung Christi (1689) by Johann Michael Rottmayr. The economical stucco was not installed until 1909.

For tourists from all over the world, the parish church of St. Paul, the oldest parish church in Passau, with its imposing high altar, the beautiful stucco work and the sumptuous furnishings - is immensely popular.

A small anecdote: The narrow tower of St. Paul had to be removed in 1950 - as Heinz has already stated ... after it was found to be higher than the towers of the cathedral. Since then, the tower is only the second highest Passau church tower.
Well, hierarchical structures - not only among humans and animals - should not be underestimated, let alone undermined ... ;-)
