    Hilltop Castle (ca. 1399) - Alzenau 🚴‍♂️

Alzenau Castle is considered one of the most beautiful secular buildings of the Late Gothic period in Franconia. It was built around 1399 by the Archbishops of Mainz and is located on a hill above the town center of Alzenau. In a document from 1399, the castle's construction and the name Alzenau are mentioned for the first time. For a long time, the castle served as the official and administrative seat of the Bishops of Mainz. The oval-shaped castle complex is divided into a large forecourt ("Lower Courtyard") and an inner castle ("Upper Courtyard"). The forecourt, surrounded by massive walls, contains the so-called farmyard, where the district court buildings are located. A steep climb leads to the inner castle, which features reinforced walls. There, you'll find an inner courtyard and a palace. The latter is entered through a pointed arch gate in the eastern part of the courtyard. The ground floor houses a large hall. A narrow spiral staircase leads to the imposing Knights' Hall on the upper floor, which is considered a particularly vivid example of a late Gothic castle hall. A special gem from the late Gothic period is the chapel bay window of the Knights' Hall in the manor house.

Today, the palace hosts a vibrant cultural program, with the Franconian Music Days and the Castle Festival enjoying national renown. The former prison houses a modern cinema lounge with a café bar.
