San Clemente Reservoir

The San Clemente Reservoir is located in the north of the province of Granada, autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain, on the bed of the River Guardal. It is entirely in the municipality of Huéscar.
In the vicinity of the reservoir there are inhabited areas such as the district of Canal de San Clemente (Huéscar) and cultural elements such as Canal de Carlos III, Presa de La Reina, Puente de las Ánimas, Los Pilares (remains of an old aqueduct). There are also natural areas such as La Sagra and the popular mariantonias, redwoods at the foot of La Sagra.
The construction of the reservoir led to the flooding of the urban center of San Clemente, which was made up of 680 inhabitants (approximately), and the small existing fertile plain along the Guardal River. An irrigation canal starts from this "swamp" and passes through the north of the city of Huéscar, reaching the limits of the municipality of Orce.
Its construction, therefore, meant, in addition to the disappearance of the district, the transfer of its inhabitants to the so-called Barrio Nuevo de San Clemente, located next to the La Encantada Industrial Estate, on the upper plain that is on the northern area of Barrionuevo and at a distance of just over 1 km. from the city, towards Puebla de Don Fadrique.
