Above the Edersee, this Polish cross testifies to a very dark chapter of German history. During World War II, a Polish slave laborer killed a German auxiliary policeman at the foot of the mountain and then fled because he feared he would be sent to a concentration camp. Since he could not be found by the search parties for weeks, the SS, on orders from Heinrich Himmler, had six imprisoned Polish prisoners hung up as a deterrent and all other Polish forced laborers had to watch the execution ..... as I said, a very dark piece of German history.
