The “Wamperte”, as the name suggests, is a massive, thick wayside shrine with an octagonal basic shape. Mysterious and legendary, it stands in an open field in the “Unterbirting” corridor. Its construction is attributed to the first half of the 15th century.
Only up close does it become apparent how unique this wayside shrine made of red sandstone is. The massive lower part is made of carved stone slabs and is closed off by a large square slab (from around 1500). The pointed arched Gothic niche on top probably comes from a demolished building from the 14th century, perhaps from the Hörersdorf church, which shows traces of numerous renovations, or from the old pilgrimage church of St. Anna, which was demolished in 1785.
Between 1992 and 1996, a lightning strike damaged the Wamperten cross.
