The old Harburger Elbbrücke was opened on 30 September 1899. The 474 m long steel arch bridge built at that time for road vehicles was the first road bridge over the Süderelbe and today only serves pedestrians and cyclists. The sandstone portals are designed by Hubert Stier and are intended to commemorate the city gates with the Wilhelmsburger and Harburg coats of arms. They used to be decorated with the imperial eagle.

In April 1897, MAN was commissioned with the construction of the bridge, which is due to a corresponding contract between the province of Hanover and Hamburg. The management for the construction of the old Harburger Elbbrücke had the electricity audio director Georg Narten. Until the early 1970s, it also served the tram between Hamburg and Harburg, the former location of the rails can be guessed to this day by the arrangement of the pavement in the southern feeder road. Between 1980 and 1995, the bridge was fundamentally restored, this accounted for the sideways cantilever footpath.

Furthermore, it offers a wonderful view of the Süderelbe towards the harbor.

The Elbe Bridge was opened 120 years ago, until 50 years ago the tram from Hamburg to Harburg crossed this bridge. To the right and left of it there were still footpaths that were removed during a restoration.

On the old Elbe bridge, you can walk across the river Elbe without any traffic and enjoy a beautiful view over the Norderelbe.

Since 1899, the 474 meter long Harburger Elbbrücke connects both banks of the Süderelbe. Originally built as an autobahn bridge, today it can only be used by pedestrians and cyclists. From the bridge you have fantastic views of the Elbe and the surrounding area.

Nice old bridge - currently (April 2021) closed for construction work until the end of 2021. The diversion is via the June 17th Bridge, which is right next to it. From there you have a nice view of the old Elbe bridge with the harbor backdrop. A great photo opportunity, especially at sunset.

Beautiful pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Elbe. From here you have a great view of the Elbe landscape, various bridges and the city center of Hamburg. Also an architectural highlight.

Impressive and a beautiful view of the Elbe. Certainly very nice in the dark, with the lanterns.

The Old Harburger Elbe Bridge was opened on September 30, 1899. It connected the two Prussian cities of Harburg and Wilhelmsburg and was originally built for pedestrians and carriages. The 474 m long steel arch bridge was the first road bridge over the Süderelbe and was also used for the tram between Hamburg and Harburg until the early 1970s. Today it is only used by pedestrians and cyclists; car traffic now runs over the parallel June 17th Bridge (until 1964 New Harburger Elbe Bridge) and Europa Bridge (Source: Wikipedia, 2024).

Originally, the paths for pedestrians and cyclists ran along the outside of the bridge, but they were dismantled during a thorough renovation between 1980 and 1995. The former route of the tram tracks can still be seen in the paving at the south portal.

Wonderful bridge, cobblestones, closed to car traffic. Be considerate of one another and we'll all get along fine.

The "Old" Harburg Elbe Bridge, completed in 1899, was the first road bridge over the southern Elbe. Until then, crossing the Elbe was only possible by train or ferry. With its river iron German arches (half-timbered arches with tension bands) and sandstone portals, the 474-meter-long bridge is an important architectural monument.
