The municipality of Niederfinow is very important from a tourist point of view and has a highlight with the ship lift, which is known far beyond Germany. In 2009 the ship lift, also known as the elevator for ships, celebrated its 75th anniversary. In the same year the foundation stone was laid for a second, larger ship lift next to the existing one. There is real construction site tourism here. It is also possible to drive through the ship lift with passenger ships and thus experience the interesting procedure.

You can drive from a canoe rental in Oderberg by boat through the boat lift and then picked up about 7 km further. Exciting! And not difficult! One should not capsize if possible. Attention: canoes tilt easily! With steamboats it works too.

The new ship lift will allow the passage of longer ships up to 110 m. In addition, ships with a larger draft can then pass the new elevator. A while (until 2025?) Should be done parallel operation.

Meanwhile, the visit costs € 3 and the bike boxes were not in operation. It seems like you do not take the cyclist seriously. Car parking spaces are sufficiently available, ways to safely connect the bike safely. Nevertheless, beautiful bike paths to the boat lifts, which you must have seen.

Cool technical monument to reach comfortably on the good bike path from Eberswalde. In the parking lot there are bicycle boxes, where the wheels and the luggage are carried out safely and easily (1 Euro).
Before 10 o'clock it is still very quiet, entrance Hebewerk: 2 Euro.

The old ship lift is always impressive and next to it is the new ship lift. Unfortunately, you have to pay admission to get to the ship's lift. The view of the Oderbruch is of course unique.

Old and new German engineering can be considered.

Very interesting how the problem of the difference in level between Havel and Oder has been solved. The old elevator was built at the beginning of the last century and will probably remain in service for a while, because the completion of the new elevator is delayed. The latter makes it possible to ship ships with greater breadth and depth. Parallel operation is planned until 2025.

Very interesting, especially the comparison of engineering and construction in late 1920 and today. Not without reason is the old ship lift a monument. Hats off.

a very impressive technical building that has now been given a new building right next door, as the old elevator no longer meets the requirements

The new ship lift will allow the passage of vessels of greater breadth and depth and replace the old ship lift, which was built in 1934. Parallel operation is planned until 2025.

A huge structure that overcomes the height difference on the Oder-Havel Canal in one go without many locks. Then as now for the important shipping route Berlin-Stettin. If you have already seen, the 3 € for the climb is worth it. From the top you have a great view and can also watch the elevator lift, very exciting. The new boat lift is next door and has been under construction since 2006. Actually, it should have been going on for a long time, but our construction projects in Berlin / Brandenburg (see BER) would like to be late and so it is supposed to be in 2021? go into operation. The old boat lift was built in about half the time (1927-1934), but is now good. I also find the old elevator much nicer than the new one. Very busy on weekends as it is a popular destination. For cyclists, e.g. combine on the very beautiful towpath on the Finow Canal from the Oder towards Eberswalde, the boat lift is a landmark that can be seen from afar. If you don't just want to watch the lift, but want to drive in the ship elevator yourself, you can either take a steamer trip or cross the boat lift in a canoe / kayak, the latter in particular is certainly very exciting. You can also marvel at the lifting operations from below if you don't always want to go up. Once you should have been upstairs anyway, very nice.

The new ship lift should go into operation in 2014. That's the case with large-scale buildings in Germany.
