    Obertorturm Rheinfelden

The Obertorturm is considered the most important tower of the medieval city fortifications of Rheinfelden. Strangely, its tower clock does not strike on the hour

Defensive tower of the city fortifications.

In Rheinfelden there are not only sights, but also hearing attractions. One of these is the Obertor. The tower clock bell strikes the upcoming full hour - for example 12 noon - even though it is only 11:53 a.m. and the hands show this correctly. But this is not the clockmaker's fault. The bell strikes too early on purpose.

It is said that this was once introduced as a service for the farmers who worked in the fields outside the city walls. In the evening the city gates were locked, and anyone who had not reached the city by the time the gates closed had to spend the night outside.

Rheinfelden is not only a place to see, but also to hear. One of these is the Upper Gate. Perhaps you can arrange to enter or leave Rheinfelden's old town through this gate exactly seven minutes before the hour. The tower clock bell will now strike the upcoming hour - for example, 12 noon - even though it is only 11:53 and the hands show this correctly. But this is not, as you might first think, a clockmaker's mistake. The bell strikes too early on purpose, and has done so since time immemorial. It is said that this was once introduced as a service for farmers who worked in the fields outside the city walls. In the evenings, the city gates were barricaded, and anyone who had not reached the city by the time the gates closed had to spend the night outside. This is where the proverbial "gate closing panic" comes from: it struck those who were a little late on their journey in the evening and could not be sure whether they would still be able to escape to the protection of the city walls. The farmers of Rheinfelden were spared this fate: when the bell rang at the gate closing time, they still had seven minutes to hurry home from the field.

First mentioned in 1256 as "Glunkins Gate".

Most important tower of the city fortifications.

The tower clock strikes 7 minutes before the hour so that the citizens can reach the city before the gates close.
