The Wertreiben moated castle in Hagen-Vorhalle is a historic moated castle on Lake Harkort, which today houses an archeology museum. The facility, surrounded by a protected landscape area, offers insights into 450 million years of history of the southern Ruhr area and the Sauerland, with a focus on paleontological and archaeological finds. The museum shows the development of life and settlement history in the region and is known for its extensive collection.
The moated Werdringen Castle, first mentioned in the 13th century, originally belonged to the Lords of Volmestein and was part of the property of the Archbishops of Cologne. Over the centuries it changed hands several times, including the Dobbe, Düdinck, Haer, Capelle, von Berchem and von Grüter families. In the 15th century it was converted into a moated castle. In the 19th century it was redesigned in the neo-Gothic style. Today the castle houses an archeology museum and is one of the most scenic places in North Rhine-Westphalia.
