The well-preserved medieval motte, the intimate courtyard, the large court and the impressively long facade on the street side reveal a long history. The residents' ties with Austria, Germany and Luxembourg are reflected in facing bricks and murals.

Little is known about the original castle. As in most places, the current complex originated from the erection of a probably wooden defense tower, on top of the still existing motte hill, which used to be surrounded by moats. From here the structure "grew" successively. The first v / d Bongard, namely Wilhelm I von dem Bongard, arrived in Wijnandsrade by marriage in 1516 to Maria van Mascherel, heiress of Wijnandsrade, van Heyden and Terblijt. Wilhelm I was also Lord of Paffendorf and Bergerhausen. He was heiress of Gulick and minister of Düren and Nörvenich in Germany. Their eldest son, Wilhelm II v / d Bongard, was married to Margaretha van Pallant. Their coats of arms are mounted in the top facade of the 16th century building. A legacy issue and the premature death of Wilhelm II are to blame for the completion of this marl building by his son Werner v / d Bongard. The latter was married to the daughter of Schellart van Obbendorf. See alliance coat of arms in the stone fireplace of the knights' hall. According to various indications, this renovation must have been completed in 1554. Further extensions are of a later date.
