The canal runs all the way from the IJssel at Dieren to the IJssel at Hattem and is closed off by dams with divers in Apeldoorn. From 1868 to 1961 it had the function of what was called a "lateral canal", a waterway completely parallel to the IJssel. This was necessary because at low and high river levels the IJssel was very difficult to navigate or because of insufficient navigation depth or, conversely, too strong a current. The canal route was then also very attractive, especially for small ships. Nowadays it is a very quiet waterway in many places, all the surrounding municipalities, together with the water board and the province, are working on making the canal more attractive for recreation.
