Due to the fertile farmland in the area of estrogen, the country was already inhabited early. 1048 or 1068, the place and a noble family of Talaheim are first mentioned in a document. The first church mention Thallhamb takes place in 1315 as a branch of the parish Riding. The pilgrimage church Maria Thalheim was first mentioned in 1413 in a document. Legend has it that at first there was a pilgrimage to a picture of Mary under a Holler shrub in the village. Later, a church was to be built on the mountain for the picture. But the venerated image of Mary has always returned to the traditional place in the center, where the present church is located.

The political community Thalheim was created by the Gemeindeedikt 1818. On 1 July 1974, the voluntary merger of the previously independent communities Fraunberg, Reichenkirchen and Thalheim.

It was not until 15 August 2000 Thalheim was renamed Maria Thalheim, in order to avoid confusion with the same named places and emphasize its special importance as a place of pilgrimage.

In 2011, the long-standing village renewal in Maria Thalheim was completed. In particular, the village square and the village stadel were renewed and a drinking fountain was built for the pilgrims. The measures had already been initiated in the 1990s.
