    Hiking

When you visit Strathcailleach Bothy, bring your own fuel (firewood, coal). There might be some peat at the Bothy, but when we spend a night there, it was completely wet and therefore useless. We were happy that we walked in with plenty of firewood.

The miles from Sandwood Bay to Strathcailleach are pretty boggy. The outlet from Sandwood Loch can be challenging to cross during or after rain. I recommend trekking poles to help you navigate over the slippery rocks and the strong current.

    Hiking

Occupying a wild spot on the moorland to the south of Cape Wrath, Strathchailleach is a former farmstead that has been since turned into a unique bothy that boasts three rooms. Nearby objectives include the stunning beach at Sandwood Bay and the 1,509-foot (460 m) Beinn Dearg in Parph's windswept interior.

The bothy was inhabited as recently as 1996 by a hermit named James MacRory-Smith, better known as Sandy. He made this shelter his home for 32 years and left his mark with a series of painted murals. The living room wall also displays his photo.
