The Castelfeder biotope, which is also known as the Arcadia of Tyrol, is a special natural experience on old soil steeped in history. A nature adventure trail leads past bare porphyry peaks, abraded by the Ice Age glacier, in between with secluded hollows and steppe grass, past grazing goats and cows, overgrown shrubbery and swampy ponds, up to the mysterious ruins. On the 190 m high porphyry hill are the remains of a Byzantine fortress that was built to protect against the Teutons. The fortress dates from around 500 AD. and the remains of the Barbarakapelle from the 6th century AD. The history of Castelfeder and its surrounding area goes back much further: Burnt sacrificial sites and various archaeological finds were dated to the 2nd millennium BC. dated.
The panoramic view from the hill is unique and includes large parts of the South Tyrolean lowlands up to the Salurner Klause, the border with Trentino and the language border.
