Eutin Castle
The Duke asks
It could hardly be more impressive in Schleswig-Holstein: The four-winged complex of the Eutin Castle, from the outside North German brick, with entrance and south tower, southern-looking inner courtyard with fountain and moat around the building is located directly on the lake and is surrounded by an expansive English language Landscaped garden.
Already around 1160 one suspects the first settlement of the Lübeck bishops here in Eutin. Quarrel with the stubborn secular citizenship of the Hanseatic city forced the clergymen from their ancestral city into the local "exile". From 1586, the Gottorf dukes, who had meanwhile been elected bishops of the prince-bishopric of Lübeck, converted the property into a prince-bishop's residence, and from 1773, when the area was united with Oldenburg and Delmenhorst, the Oldenburg (grand) dukes became lords of the house: Eutin was first their seat of government, later only summer residence. The representative castle was built for hundreds of years, in the meantime it burned down to a large extent, like so many buildings of the time, until it was given its present form around 1840 with an increase and the design of the castle square.
The future Tsarina Katharina the Great also reports in her memoirs about life in the Eutin Castle - after all, her mother grew up here, she visited the court for a long time and finally met her future husband, Prince Karl Peter Ulrich von Holstein, here for the first time. Gottorf, later Tsar Peter. Other famous personalities such as the Goethe painter Wilhelm Tischbein or the father of the famous composer Carl Maria von Weber left their mark on the court. Progressive dukes introduced hygienic innovations and garden-philosophical redesigns and shaped the regional history for a long time, but this ended with the abdication of the Oldenburgs in 1918.

Today the castle impresses visitors from all over the world as a museum ("residential palace of the dukes") and with special exhibitions. Large-scale ceiling paintings, precious wall coverings, original pieces of furniture, paintings, clocks or pieces of equipment such as three unusual ship models of Tsar Peter the Great can be admired. After more than 10 years of construction, the first restoration section of the palace was opened for sightseeing in 1997; A restaurant-café brings the house to life today, concerts and other events take place in the castle rooms as well as private or company celebrations.

"Weimar of the North" is sometimes called Eutin affectionately. Surrounded by numerous lakes, forests and rolling hills, Eutin offers a more cultural center of the region, as here also at a really small court large personalities were - so worked the Goethe painter Wilhelm Tischbein here, the composer Carl Maria v.. Weber was born here. In his honor, the Eutin Festival takes place in the summer in the castle garden.

The white 1.70m large flora, goddess of flowers and flowers, youth and spring, is surrounded by yew trees on a small pedestal on the banks of the Tralauteiches as an "eye-catcher" at the end of the lime tree avenue.
From the current point of view, no path leads directly to the flora. The statue is a replica of the original flora, which dates back to around 1829 and is now in the castle. The sense of detachment, the inaccessibility, the femininity and the youth of the sculpture depicted can be understood as a form of remembrance of Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig (1755 - 1829) to his late deceased wife Frederike (1765 - 1785).
The prototype for the Flora statue stands in the Museo Capitolino in Rome. Other flora statues were found in the English Gardens of Blenheim Palace in the county of Oxfordshire and Stourhead near Stourhead.

The Eutin Palace in Eutin in Ostholstein forms the cultural center and the nucleus of the city and, along with the Gottorfer and the Glücksburg Castle, is one of the most important courtly secular buildings in Schleswig-Holstein

Historic downtown
The large, old market square with numerous historical facades of different styles, the widow's palace that was never used for this purpose, the former court pharmacy, citizens 'and officials' palace in Stolbergstraße, craftsmen's houses at the church and of course the brick St. Michaelis Church with the leaning tower make this Flair of the compact old town of Eutin. You can experience them particularly well on a guided tour.
