Tips

  • JUST HIKE

The "actual" source of the Danube, because the Brigach and Breg come together in Donaueschingen to get the Danube on their way. A place to linger with refreshments.

Since the Brigach and Breg get the Danube on their way, Furtwangen claims the source of the Danube at this point

“Brigach and Breg bring the Danube to the river,” is a well-known saying from the region. Here you can find the geographical origin of the second longest river in Europe. The Breg source is the most distant source of the Danube, therefore it is not labeled with "Breg source" but with "Danube source".

I'm so happy that I could visit this place and see where this beautiful river starts its journey. We've eaten there at " Höhengasthaus Kolmenhof" fresh trout from their own fishery with a delicious salad. The staff was really friendly and answered all our questions. The place also has rooms for tourists- I really recommend it and I'm planning to spend my next holiday there.

The St. Martin's Chapel as well as the (main) source of the Danube (Breg-Quelle) are worth the detour - what makes Vienna or Budapest so special starts HERE.

Danube spring, in addition, this plain is over 1000 m high and you can still find relatively deep snow.

The place is always open and you don't need tickets. It's really nice and I can just recommend it. There is also an information table on which you can read something about the source. Nearby you will find the Höhengasthaus Kolmenhof at the source of the Danube and St. Martinskapelle, where you can eat something or spend the night.

At this point / I would like to quickly / say something about the source:
To quote the incomparable humorist Heinz Erhardt (1909 - 1979), who was known to a wide audience for his pun and “Noch'n Gedicht”, with a short quatrain:
"There is certainly a lot of beautiful about it,
    on the element, the wet.
Because you can drink the water.
But you can - also leave it alone. "
    (H.Erhardt)
