The Saale weir in Bad Kösen (Naumburg) is known to be particularly dangerous. On June 10, 1984, four people died in a tragic boat accident. A rubber dinghy overturned at the weir on the Saale with seven people on board. The fire brigade, police and soldiers of the Soviet Army were only able to pull three of the inmates out of the water alive during the rescue operation. The bodies of the four people were not recovered until days later. Two firefighters were injured during the rescue operation, one of them seriously. (yop)
