Priorei. Of the famous Priorlinde, today only the rotten torso with three stems and the remains of the central trunk are left over - held up by straps and supports. Although in 2011 it was decided to let the Priorlinde, which is owned by the city of Hagen, die, it continues to thrive every year. Their remains still give an idea of what an imposing tree once stood at this point.

    1. Location / accessibility: In the Priorei district, at the apex of the streets Zur Priorlinde and the Kluser Weg, you will find the natural monument of Priorlinde, the oldest on the present city Hagen.

    2. Dimensions: Today only a small torso is present. But even in the 70s, the Priorlinde presented in their appearance as an imposing tree wonder. On the approximately one meter high stem with six feet circumference rested the candelabrum, consisting of seven horizontal, four feet long projecting branches (stings), at whose Ends in 1969 twelve shoots stretched almost vertically in the air. He is the oldest copy in Hagen.

    3. History: These are the dying remains of a probably 500 to 600 year old summer linden (Tilia platyphyllos), a so-called "led linden". The installation of steel cables, bolted threaded rods, structural steel gratings and pipes to drain the water from fouling sites in the 70s should ensure that the tree is maintained for the next 200 years. In 1974, the Priorlinde was then placed under protection for the first time as a natural monument.

Unfortunately, the remedial measures did not show the desired success. As early as 1983 and 84, partial remedial measures had to be carried out. Due to the trend towards cost savings in nature conservation already apparent in the eighties, the expenditure of these funds was rejected by the District Government of Arnsberg with the order of 1986. She decided to "let the tree die in dignity", a decision that was not revised by the district government Arnsberg despite repeated efforts.

    4. Descent:

Similarly, "led linden trees" or "tiered linden trees" like the prior lime trees can be found in many places in the Federal Republic. These are often historical, tree-shaped trees in which traditional dances (dance linden) or sociable sat and celebrated, but among which was also spoken earlier law.

    5. Special features:

In the vernacular, the Priorlinde is also called Briggerigge, linguistically derived from "Brüchte" (= court) and "Igge" (= corner) comes. This indicates that under this tree was once held court. Reports also assume that wages were paid under the Priorlinde. In the realm of myths, however, the story is banished that the Priorlinde bore its name because at its foot a Prior (abbot) was once buried.
