After the last ice age, sand drifts in the river area created various sand dunes. Due to the later river clay deposition, many of these dunes have disappeared below ground level. Only the highest peaks stick out above it.

Traces of early habitation have been found on these peaks, but there has been no permanent habitation at Dreumel. Later, these hills were mainly seen as non-profitable grassland and were sometimes even excavated to use the sand for roads or buildings. In front of the current Dreumelse berg there was even a slightly higher 'mountain' for the land consolidation that has been excavated.
