    Hiking

A cypress dome — sometimes called a cypress head — looks dome-shaped from a distance, because the tallest trees grow at its center. However, those tall trees are actually thriving in a water- and peat-filled depression, so a cypress dome also signals very wet, swampy ground.

The Lettuce Lake Park Loop is a fantastic, easy hiking trail that immerses you in Florida's natural beauty, perfect for a quick escape into the wild. You'll traverse a mix of paved paths, natural trails, and extensive boardwalks that lead directly through cypress swamps and along the Hillsborough River. Keep your eyes peeled for alligators, egrets, and other wildlife, especially from the impressive Observation Tower that offers sweeping views of the river and surrounding ecosystems.

This popular 2.4-mile (3.8 km) loop, with a negligible 8 feet (2 metres) of elevation gain, takes about 57 minutes to complete, making it ideal for all skill levels. Parking is available at Lettuce Lake Conservation Park, but since it's one of the most popular trails in the area, arriving early is recommended to beat the crowds. Check the park's official website for any potential boardwalk closures before your visit.

What truly sets this trail apart is its commitment to preserving over half of its 240 acres in an undeveloped state, offering a genuine glimpse into Florida's diverse habitats. The 3,500-foot boardwalk system allows you to explore sensitive floodplain forests without disturbance, making it a prime spot for birding and wildlife photography. It's a family-friendly hike that showcases the unique appeal of Tampa's natural environment.

The Cypress Dome loop from Rock Hammock offers a delightful, easy stroll through a variety of South Florida ecosystems, making it a fantastic choice for a quick nature fix. You'll wander through pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, and wet prairies, with the highlight being the distinctive cypress domes that rise majestically from the landscape. Keep an eye out for surprisingly clear canals and, in springtime, a vibrant display of wildflowers that add a splash of color to the trail.

This family-friendly route is generally flat and well-maintained, covering 1.3 miles (2.0 km) with a minimal 8 feet (2 metres) of elevation gain, taking only about 30 minutes to complete. While it's an easy hike suitable for any fitness level, be prepared for seasonally wet and muddy sections, especially in popash sloughs, where cypress knees and roots can make footing a bit uneven. No permits are needed for day hiking, and the area is open for exploration.

Part of the vast Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed, this trail provides a unique opportunity to experience a crucial protected area vital for the region's water supply. It's a prime spot for wildlife observation, with frequent sightings of birds and alligators, and offers a peaceful escape into Florida's natural beauty. The trail is also dog-friendly, provided your furry friend stays on a leash.
