Former customs/border station to Hesse.

The Bayrische Schanz tavern is the highest tavern in the Spessart and a very popular and rustic restaurant on the Bavarian-Hessian border. The former customs station has existed since the 17th century, but the history of this place is much older. The reason for this is the Birkenhainer Straße, today a hiking trail, which formed an important trade route in the Middle Ages. Burial mounds along the way and, for example, the discovery of an ax from the Bronze Age show their prehistoric importance.
The Hermannskoppe, at 567 m the fourth highest point in the Spessart, is only around 600 m away as the crow flies, already on the Hessian side.
