Mountain Biking Highlight
The nature reserve "Großer Stein" has a special feature. This is a Tertiary-born basaltic promontory, which in the Ice Age has ruptured into a block of basalt boulders. The up to half a meter in diameter large boulders are exposed in the upper area and are covered by a species-rich moss and lichen flora.
In the lower part of the block heap, the fine soil collected from above has collected and here rare forest formations with sometimes lush cabbage layer falter. The basalt crest and its block heaps are a very rare habitat and have a high protection value. Around 28 hectares of the state forest surrounding the "Großer Stein" with more than 150-year-old beech forests in various forms are designated as natural forest reserves.Source: rothaarsteig.de/Rothaarsteig3/Rothaarsteig-Audiowege2/Grosser-Stein
