Best Hikes to Leofels Castle Ruins

Tips

  • On a spur above the Jagsttal lies the castle Leofels. The plant stands in a slight spur position and is separated by a deep ditch from the place and the mountain.
Access is now as then over a stone bridge that spans the wide ditch. Directly behind it is the first gate. Part of the stone bridge was originally a drawbridge. The gate belongs to a Vorwerk, originally led by a trade route. The Vorwerk is flanked on the left side by a higher kennel.
From Vorwerk a path leads up a ramp up to the castle and ends in the outer kennel complex in the east. In the case of an attack, the castle was secured to the west by the ditch and to the east by the double kennel. To the east, south and west it was also protected by a thick shield wall. At Burg Leofels the shield wall stretched from the width and height in the form of a ring wall around the entire core castle. The attack side in the south was also flanked by a protruding round tower.
The Kernburg is today the best preserved part of the castle. Behind the narrow gate of the Kernburg opens the view of the large yard. This is divided today by a large, double archway into two courtyards. Behind the archway is the Palas, which is the only well-preserved building in the castle. Both at the Palas and at the other remains of the buildings, numerous small construction details have been preserved, such as gothic windows, beam supports and remains of a bay window. The old cellar vault was partially re-exposed and can be visited. Two entrances lead into the large vault.
The Palas is the only building in the castle that has been completely preserved from its outer walls and has old windows and the original entrance. Right next to it was the keep, which today only exists as a stump.
Castle Leofels can be completely bypassed once. On the tour you will come across ornaments, humpback cubes, outer walls, as well as some abortions. The path leads through the kennels and the moat back in front of the gate of the plant.
From the atmosphere Leofels Castle is slightly impressive. The structure is almost unique in its construction with the Vorwerk and the strange arches in the yard. It's worth a visit.

  • Wonderful castle complex with a great panorama all around the view. Well maintained. One can very well imagine the "Hunchback of Notre Dame" at the open-air plays planned for 2021. Hopefully it works ...
