      Text information sign (extract):
“[…] According to historical sources, a coal seam in the Burning Mountain caught fire in 1688. Shepherds who started a fire near the seam were originally blamed for the fire. However, it is more likely that the seam was ignited in the course of the mining work by the open fire of a miner's lamp. […] Later attempts to control the fire and keep it going also proved unsuccessful. […]
The clay slate, which was abundant in the soil, was subjected to a roasting process by the fire. The basis for the extraction of ala was given. It was drained of slate by downpours, groundwater and later on-site water. Potassium alum and iron vitriol were obtained from the lye in nearby alum huts. These products formed valuable raw materials for medicine, for paper manufacture, for tannery and as a stain for dyeing textiles (laundry blue, Prussian blue). Already in 1691 a sovereign concession for the extraction of alum was granted.
At times, three alum huts worked in Dudweiler and Sulzbach, until the slate stocks were essentially exhausted by the middle of the 19th century. […] "
