The mighty Prince's Castle towers above Burgeis in the upper Vinschgau valley, below the famous Marienberg Monastery. Built in the 13th century as the seat of the Prince-Bishops of Chur, it now houses a technical college for agriculture and forestry. Inside and in the courtyard of the castle, remarkable murals depicting knights and coats of arms adorn the walls. Bishop Berthold II first mentioned the castle in a document in 1292.
The massive keep, with its three-meter-thick, impenetrable walls, is impressive – the oldest part of the former fortified stronghold. Additional sections of the castle were built in the 16th and 17th centuries. About 30 years ago, a tower collapsed.
