Tips

  • There are several sequoias or Wellingtonia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) in Tübingen and in the Schönbuch near Tübingen, whose seeds were imported from North America. After this tree species had only been discovered by the Europeans in 1850, King William I had seeds brought to Europe. Due to a conversion error of the units or a misunderstanding, he got a lot more seeds than he had ordered and had some of them sowed in the Wilhelma. The redwoods were sown in 1865 in Wilhelma in a cold house under glass, from which about 6000-8000 plants have emerged, 3000-4000 were distributed according to a decree of April 7, 1866 Förster in Württemberg. The plants were then trained in nurseries and later planted out in the field. In the cold winter of 1879/80, however, most of these trees froze, the few remaining were distributed over several places in the Schönbuch.

  • I was surprised. I have seen many mammoth trees, but never so many at one time.
