After the Second World War, there were considerations to build a large housing estate on the fields south of Berlin. The plan was for buildings with a maximum of five floors and plenty of green space in between.
However, due to the construction of the Wall, the site had to be compacted and almost 19,000 apartments and the highest residential tower in Berlin with 30 floors were built.
The settlement is also known by the book "Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo", because the protagonist Christiane F. grew up here.
