There are a lot of bogs in this area that you can either still see, or whose relics are manifested by street names, for example. For a long time peat was mined in these bogs, until the awareness of the value of this landscape (both as habitat but also as storage of the greenhouse gas Co2) slowly grew. Today, attempts are being made in many places to re-wet drained moors.
For cycling it is here either way nice and that is in any case pretty good for the climate. ;)
