The old town of Viterbo is a real jewel among the numerous medieval towns of Italy. In many cases, the old town is characterized by churches and palaces from the 13th century as the best preserved old town in central Italy. Worth seeing are, among others, the Palazzo dei Papi in Piazza San Lorenzo and the Palazzo dei Priori in Piazza del Plebiscito. Viterbo was in the Middle Ages papal residence and venue of a conclave (papal election). The church of San Francesco houses the famous papal tombs of Pope Clement IV and Hadrian V. Pope John XXI is buried in the Cathedral of San Lorenzo.

Wonderful place, not overcrowded with tourists but more the "original" Italy.
