Tips

  • Today's west tower is the third tower at this point. In the 14th century the first was built as a church tower, in the 17th century the second. It was destroyed in 1855 and the remains were blown up in 1914. The new west tower was built in 1933 and has been a youth hostel since the end of World War II.

The tower can be climbed and there is also a bistro: jugendherberge.de/jugendherbergen/wangerooge-565/portraet.

  • You have the possibility in the old building to go upstairs (for a small fee). You have to ask at the reception.

  • The West Tower has always been an attraction; when I was there with school in 1981, climbing it was the absolute highlight – back then the youth hostel was still in the Dünenhalle; also very beautiful and idyllic
