The castle is situated on the site Meerberg, once owned by the Calced Carmelites of Bruges. After the French Revolution, part of it came into the hands of François de Serret, who built the castle "Drie Koningen" in 1802. Later, the families Van Den Bossche, Bayeux de Avrincourt and van Outryve-d’Ydewalle also lived there. This last family provided two mayors: André and Hubert. Hubert van Outryve-d’Ydewalle was married to Hélène du Sart de Bouland, better known in Beernem as Countess d’Hespel because she married Count d’Hespel after Hubert's death.
