Axpo is a leading electricity producer in Switzerland and guarantees a reliable electricity supply in north-eastern Switzerland. The base load is secured with nuclear power plants and river power plants. Storage and pumped storage plants are used to cope with fluctuations in demand and during peak load periods.

The Wildegg-Brugg low-pressure run-of-river power plant is 100 percent owned by Axpo. With an output of 50 megawatts (MW), the power plant uses the gradient of the Aare over a river length of around 9 km. This enables an average annual electricity generation of around 300 gigawatt hours (GWh). The Wildegg-Brugg power plant thus makes an important contribution to securing the base load.

The subject of the environmental declaration is the product of 1 kWh of net electricity generated in the Wildegg-Brugg power plant and the subsequent delivery to a customer connected to the Axpo power grid in the reference year 2011/12 (October 1 to September 30).

The life cycle analysis (LCA) method was used to quantify the environmental impact. It takes into account the entire life cycle of electricity generation and all associated processes "from cradle to grave". The most important results of the LCA are summarised in the table below. Other environmental impacts such as resource consumption or land use are shown in the environmental declaration.
