The Heidesee in the northwest of the city of Bottrop is a three-water former gravel excavation complex. The area was included in the recreation concept of the Ruhr area in 1973 and designed in sub-areas in the sense of biotope and species protection. It has become an important habitat for plants and animals that are worthy of protection. The lake, which today measures approximately 54 hectares, is home to a nationwide significant underwater plant vegetation (including five candelabra algae species).
