The very steep approach to the 67m high observation tower on the Paaschberg is worthwhile because you are rewarded with fantastic views in all directions. And whoever climbed the mountain first of course also climbs the tower. You can take a breather upstairs and go down like a rocket anyway

From the observation tower (67m high) on the Paaschberg in Salzhausen you have a great view over the landscape. Here, on the edge of the so-called Geest, you can let your gaze wander into the Luhetal, which merges further north into the Winsener Marsch. You can also discover the old church of Salzhausen - and perhaps pay a small visit after climbing the tower on Paaschberg. Pay attention to the artworks around the tower - it's worth it!

Worth knowing: "Geest and march" - two terms like "fire and water". The Geest used to be the epitome of scant farming on sandy soils, while the march stood for fertility and prosperity. No wonder, because the fine fertility guaranteeing soil particles were blown long ago by glacial winds and water currents and washed down into the march, where they guarantee green meadows and good crops.

        The legend of Paaschberg

Once, according to legend, a mighty king crossed this region of sun, sand and heather. The monarch considered himself invincible and almost himself a god. So he did not fear the wrath of this one either. He crossed this landscape with his golden carriage - drawn by 8 centimes - and his army to defend himself against invading enemies. Sand and heather made it difficult to move forward and the sun did the rest. So he cursed what the stuff kept: "What a godforsaken country! Sand and nothing but sand! Not a tree that provides cool shade, not a wind that cools my hot forehead! I curse Donar who created this land! I curse Frigga, who did not plant flowers and trees on this land! I curse Ziu, who led me here, into the desert! I curse you, all gods! "As soon as he had finished, a mighty storm arose, and sand trickled so rapidly and in huge quantities upon the king, his chariot, and his army, all of which were no longer to be seen ,

And today it is said that the king lies buried under the Paaschberg and his army among the other surrounding hills.
