    Tips

    March 7, 2017

This paved trail follows the West shore of Lake Chabot from the Marina (which provides weekend cruise ship rides in summer, boat rentals, and personal kayak launch areas komoot.com/highlight/214352 ), north toward the dam and the north end of the lake, to complete the bike loop. However, if it is closed at the dam (like it was in 2017 for seismic retrofit construction) hikers and bikers can use Lake Chabot Road and a somewhat challenging steep detour via Dunsmuir Open Space komoot.com/highlight/215586 .

Upgrades to the dam are needed as the Lake Chabot Reservoir was built in 1874-75 as a primary source of water for the East Bay. The 315-acre lake was closed to recreation for 91 years. Legislation passed in the 1960s opened the lake for controlled recreational uses. Currently, the lake serves as a standby emergency water supply, so swimming and any skin-contact with the water is prohibited. The 315-acre is stocked with trout and catfish. There are also bass, crappie, and other fish. A popular event is the annual spring fishing derby. There are several fishing piers in the park. Hikers enjoy scenic walks on the 280-acre Fairmont Ridge or take the Lake Chabot History Walk. Since 2013 an outdoor Fitness Zone offers six interactive exercise machines set in a rain garden landscaped with native plants. ebparks.org/parks/lake_chabot
