The Hayward Regional Shoreline – Heron Bay loop from Oyster Bay Regional Shoreline delivers a unique touring cycling experience, blending panoramic San Francisco Bay vistas with serene marshland exploration. You'll navigate a mix of paved and unpaved gravel paths, passing protected wetlands where you might spot marsh hawks and shorebirds, all while enjoying views of the Oakland International Airport and the distant city skyline. This moderate 18.2-mile (29.3 km) route, with a gentle 112 feet (34 metres) of elevation gain, takes approximately 2 hours and 17 minutes to complete, offering a rewarding ride for those with a good fitness level.

To make the most of your visit, plan for a ride that requires a good fitness level, especially given some unpaved and potentially challenging gravel segments. The trail is generally quiet and peaceful, making it an ideal escape from city bustle. While no specific parking warnings are noted, starting earlier in the day can often enhance the tranquility of your ride along the shoreline.

This route is a fantastic example of successful land repurposing, as Oyster Bay Regional Shoreline was once a landfill transformed into a vibrant public park. It's also a segment of the ambitious San Francisco Bay Trail, offering a glimpse into the region's commitment to continuous waterfront access. Keep an eye out for interesting features like Roger Berry's "Rising Wave" sculpture and remnants of old timber landing sites visible at low tide, adding historical and artistic touches to your journey.
