Enormous investment has been made in constructing this vault to ensure this priceless document is protected, yet available for the public to view.
The vault is built in between the Georgian and Victorian Prison building which itself is within the confines of the wall of Lincoln Castle.
After purchasing a ticket you enter the Prison building then approach the vault via a door. Stairs lead downwards passing a whole wall bearing English translated text of the document. Emboldened in gold lettering are the clauses still relevant in law today. Sit in the video theatre for a visual explanation of its history before viewing the Magna Carta itself inside a glass case in a small room. Also on view is the Charter of the Forest.
This Magna Carta is one of the only four remaining copies of the original 1215 document, one in Salisbury Cathedral and two in the British Library make up the others.
Contrary to popular belief it was ‘never signed’, it was authenticated by the adding the King’s Seal at the bottom, now unfortunately missing.
