The dam takes its name from the village of Schömbach to the east, where some farms had to be abandoned to build the dam. The dammed waters are the Wiera and the Leuba. The outflow of the dam feeds the Wyhra. The dam is used to supply industrial water for agriculture, to increase low water levels, for flood protection, fishing and to protect birds.

The dam has a so-called "ordinary" flood protection space of 6.21 million m³, which is part of the storage space of 7.71 million m³. In addition, there is an "extraordinary" flood protection space of 2.28 million m³, which together with the storage space of 7.71 million m³ makes a total storage space of 9.99 million m³.

    Barrage structure

The dam is a sand dam with an asphalt concrete outer seal. The structure was built between 1967 and 1972 near Altmörbitz near Geithain and repaired between 1993 and 1996.

    Leisure activities

The leisure activities available at the reservoir include fishing and hiking. In particular, the dam is accessible. However, there is no hiking trail that leads directly along the reservoir and around it. There is a viewing point at the western end of the dam. Directly to the east of the dam is the Leinawald nature reserve. To the south is the Wieratal, which is also of tourist interest.

    ...................

The Wyhra, formerly also Wyra, above the Schömbach dam also Wiera, is a 47-kilometer-long tributary of the Pleiße in Saxony and Thuringia. As Wiera, the river gives its name to the towns of Ober- and Niederwiera in the northern part of the Zwickau district, the Wieratal, and as Wyhra to the town of Wyhra, a district of the Saxon town of Borna.

The dam is open daily and can be accessed from both sides. Parking spaces and a pavilion to relax in are available.

The dam's crest is open to pedestrians. With Komoot, it is entered on the map as blocked. There is a gate and the dam management can close it at any time in the event of unforeseen events.
