    The air force base in Rheine was completed in 1940. During the Second World War, many day and night missions were flown from there. After the conquest in the spring of 1945 by the Allies, the base was briefly used and then taken out of service.

    Since 1960, after the Bundeswehr was founded in 1955, the military airfield belonged to the German Air Force. Part of the Army Aviation Troops were stationed in the Theodor Blank Barracks on the site. Further units were stationed until 2012. Including the transport helicopter regiment 15, transport battalion 170 and the Army Aviation Squadron 101.

    The Santätsregiment 4 has been stationed in the Theodor Blank Barracks since 2019.
