The Hohnsensee is a 500 m long, 250 m wide and 9.5 ha swimming lake in Hildesheim. The Hohnsensee is located south of the new town between the street "Hohnsen", the Innerste, the outdoor pool Johanniswiese and the overflow basin for the Innerste. The northern part belongs as a beach with a 150 m long sandy beach to the pool and is therefore subject to a charge, in the remaining part can be bathed at your own risk free. According to the decision of the Council of the City of Hildesheim of 22 November 1965, the water was intended from the outset as a recreational area. It was created by gravel quarrying from 1966 to 1974 and was named after the desert village of Hohnsen. On June 29, 2008, children were baptized for the first time in the Hohnsensee by the pastors of the Protestant-Lutheran communities of St. Andrew, St. Lamberti and St. Michael.
