What exactly is an Aue? 150 years ago nobody would have asked this question. The lowlands along the rivers and streams were barely built by dams back then. Instead, the water acted as a creative builder and designed varied, dynamic floodplains.
A natural flood plain is characterized by the change between high and low water. Depending on the water level, previously flooded areas are exposed or flooded again, new gutters emerge, which can grow into tributaries, ponds remain, islands grow from sediment that deposits. This change leads to a dynamic that creates a unique diversity in flora and fauna. In the floodplains, 40 percent of all plant species occurring in Switzerland and 80 percent of the species are found.
At the end of the 20th century in Switzerland, the realization prevailed that the remaining floodplains must be preserved. Since 1992, the federal ordinance on the protection of floodplain areas of national importance, it comprises about 300 objects or about half a percent of the land area. The Aargau as a "land of the streams" goes even further: originated by a popular initiative, since 1994 there is a constitutional article that calls for the creation of an allotment park on one percent of the cantonal area. Since then, it has been possible to follow how this order will be implemented step by step and that the work is now on the finishing straight.
Experience the floodplains
More space for nature: the declared goal of Auenschutzpark Aargau. At the same time, however, man should not be locked out. Because the encounter with nature in its unaffected dress also meets the needs of modern society, which seeks a balance to the technically sophisticated everyday environment. Therefore, the renaturation of the rivers has also improved access to them. Aargauer Auen can thus be hiked, experienced by bike, in parts cross boats. Observation and viewpoints or fire pits invite you to linger. There are unmistakable traces of Biberfrass, there a kingfisher just above the water moves its elegant path, the Yellow Anemone sparkles cheekily from the undergrowth, and the leaves dress of white willow shines in the sun ... and sometimes there is just just soothing peace.Source: aargautourismus.ch
