The nature reserve is located in the north of the city Hildesheim between Himmelsthür and Giesen. It protects a stream valley. The creek, which is dammed in the nature reserve to two ponds, rises slightly west of the nature reserve and flows a scarce kilometer east of the nature reserve in the heart. The ponds were created no later than the end of the 18th century by the episcopal estate Steuerwald and used for fish farming. The ponds and the largely open pastures in the nature reserve are relics of the historic cultural landscape of Hildesheim's highlands.
