Old railway embankment separates reed-covered breeding waters from natural recreational lake
For those seeking relaxation, nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts, the De Wittsee with its natural shores and colorful birdlife is equally an attraction. From the benches on the old embankment you can see coots, great crested grebes, cormorants and, with a bit of luck, reed warblers.
It is a peaceful place, even if the newly developed BahnRadweg is used very intensively in fine weather. The bike path was established on a section of the old railway line Kempen-Kaldenkirchen, after the railway connection was abandoned after more than 100 years of railway history 1980 years.
In the north of the dam, the large lake offers opportunities for swimming, sailing and canoeing. The small lake in the south, on the other hand, is under nature protection, because many waterfowl such as the gray wagtail breed there in spring. From the Wasser.Blick you can walk the large De Wittsee on the orange marked trail (3.8 kilometers). It leads through varied terrain with views of the lake, Bruchwald and extensive meadows. Trip to the nature reserve Sassenfeld at the Stemmeshof and the landscaped Baerlo are highly recommended. There is much to discover for young and old alike - be it the art of pasture processing and the Scottish Highland cattle at the Landschaftshof or the lovingly and detailed designed outdoor area of the nature reserve.
