"The Ruhr Valley Museum is a museum of local history in the" Old Town Hall "to Schwerte.

The Old Town Hall of the city Schwerte was built in 1548/49 and today houses the Ruhr Valley Museum and the city archives. The elongated stone building is aligned with its formerly open and closed since 1997 by a glazed passage at the representative Schaufront in the north to the former market square. Today, the glazed porch is used as a multifunctional space for exhibitions, lectures or small concerts.

The narrow sides of the building are provided with unadorned stepped gables. The upper floor is broken by stone cross windows, while the round windows in the basement are a completion of the 19th century. The plastered building with a stone structure was restored between 1952 and 1957.

The interior of the Old Town Hall of Schwerte is characterized by several conversions and installations. On both floors are longitudinal beams on wooden supports, the ground floor was formerly divided by a running along the longitudinal axis timbered wall.

The Old Town Hall is a testimony to the flower sword in the Middle Ages and early modern times. The building was later also used as a court, prison and grain scales.
