Largely isolated from the public, the Hengsen reservoir runs right by the waterworks between the municipalities of Fröndenberg, Holzwickede and Schwerte along the Bahnwald nature reserve. Its dimensions are about one kilometer long and 250 meters wide. The drinking water reservoir at the Hengsen reservoir is normally accessible only on a very small section of the bank, which can be reached from the Lappenhausen road.
The Hengsen waterworks in the Ruhr valley has existed since 1908. 142 hectares are available as water catchment area. To enrich the groundwater, pre-cleaned Ruhr water is infiltrated into the subsoil via large seepage basins.
