This sculpture marks an important junction of Via Claudia Augusta. 14 v. Chr. Until AD 50 BC there was a Roman road station in Epfach with about 80 soldiers and riders. It was the task to secure the crossing of the Via Claudia with the old salt road, which came from Salzburg here crossed the river and led to Kempten. It was the most important road junction in southern Bavaria. There was a settlement called Abodiacum, in which craftsmen and traders settled.
