The "Hübsche Stein" is a boundary stone from 1616.
There is also a table with two benches here.

Striking and easily overlooked waypoint in the long valley near the meeting book between Machtolsheim and Merklingen. From here you can drive "downhill" into the Lautertal and on to Herrlingen or "uphill" into the wide valley and on to Laichingen. Beautiful area, very interesting old landmark and a welcome resting place. The stone that has stood here for over 400 years (since 1616) originally marked the meeting of three different territories. The territory of the Duchy of Württemberg, that of the Free Imperial City of Ulm and that of the Helfenstein County. So the three deer sticks stand for Württemberg, the sign for Ulm, one the elephant for Helfenstein. A few years ago, the stone was "tidied up" and a rest area was created. It's worth a look.
