Like all open pits, the Opencast Inden mine is operated by RWE in the Rhenish lignite mining area. The annual production amounts to 22 million tons of brown coal and serves exclusively the supply of the power plant Weisweiler (the rumor to consequence after the 'Kohlaususstieg' to a geo-thermal power plant to be converted!). The coal seams are up to 45 meters thick, therefore, the degradation can be done with the help of bucket wheel excavators. The mineable reserves of the opencast mine currently amount to more than 400 million tons of lignite (2019).
