    Berumerfehn Canal

To transport the peat from Berumerfehn to the north, the Norder Fehngesellschaft (Norder Fehn Companie) had Oldenburg workers build the Berumerfehn Canal, also known as the Fehn Canal …

The canal was built around 200 years ago when the village of Berumerfehn (formerly Norden Fehn) was founded. The water was used to drain the moors and to transport the peat to the north of the city. At the time, peat was the preferred fuel in large parts of East Frisia.
The peat was transported on peat barges, pulled from a towpath by people or draft animals.
Today the attractive hiking and cycling path runs along the route of this towpath.

The path was widened in the summer of 2020, so that it is now possible to cycle across the street without any problems. Before that, it could get tight.
