Built in the second decade of the twentieth century for military purposes, this fort is as decadent as it is fascinating. Easily accessible from Serrada or San Sebastiano, it certainly deserves a stop.

Called «Zwischenwerk Sommo», Forte Sommo alto was built on the homonymous hill, at 1613 m above sea level, between 1911 and 1914.
Arranged on three floors, it was equipped with two 10 cm howitzers in an armored dome and an observatory tower.
The close defense was instead entrusted to 18 machine gun positions. Designed as a fortified barracks, during construction it was transformed into a real fort.
Without a moat but protected by an embankment, it controlled the underlying furrow of the Val Orsara and, in agreement with the nearby Forte Dosso delle Somme, the pass of Passo Coe.
It was equipped with four advanced armored positions, connected to the central body by two long underground tunnels, still viable.
